THE PROJECT

Dementia has many forms but our project is focussed on opening up a conversation with children about the memory loss aspect of the condition.

We have created a picture book Betty’s Big Day Out for young readers who will join Betty on a journey in a medieval fantasy setting where people help celebrate her birthday.

A wide range of crafts are available to accompany a visit to a library, school or residential care where we will present a reading, songs and a diorama to activate the story.

Betty’s Big Day Out is now ready to share and available for purchase Thursday 30th March 2023 through the website

Heather wrote a picture book version of the event. She was introduced to illustrator, Kayley-Ellen Slater who reimagined the story into a medieval fantasy of exquisite drawings and gorgeous colour palette.

Diagnosed with mild dementia, Betty lived with her daughter Heather and their blind cavoodle Shanks in Perth, Western Australia..

She was turning 94 in 2020 and was looking forward to celebrating with a birthday party at home. The arrival of Covid resulted in a halt to home gatherings due to social distancing requirements.

Heather’s friends suggested Betty could be driven to their front lawns where birthday wishes could be given using music, dance and art.

Betty was driven to six celebration stations where people created a visual memory for her.

That night, a tired but happy Betty declared it to be the best day ever. The next morning, she had no recollection of the event.

People living with dementia enjoy the immediacy of a moment and if they are unable to recall a special time, their guests have the memories.
